The Story of a Discovery
The lands of Anatolia were once again filled with valuable archaeological discoveries in 2023. Our country, which has an archaeological wealth that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, is becoming more and more important each year with the excavations and research carried out. This year, many of our cultural assets that were smuggled abroad illegally were brought back to their homeland through the work carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. Istanbul, which has hosted many civilizations, has a different history at every point. A new museum and exhibition area that combines our cultural past with the present was opened to the public in Zeytinburnu. Kazlıçeşme Art awaits its visitors with its floor mosaics and a sarcophagus containing the remains of two individuals.

2023 was a very productive year in terms of archaeology. Many new cultural assets were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ancient city of Gordion in the Polatlı district of Ankara and the Wooden Roofed and Wooden Carrier Mosques in Anatolia (Konya-Eşrefoğlu Mosque, Kastamonu-Mahmut Bey Mosque, Eskişehir-Sivrihisar Mosque, Afyonkarahisar-Afyonkarahisar Ulu Mosque, Ankara-Arslanhane Mosque) are among those added to the list this year. The importance of Anatolia in terms of human history was proven once again with a hominin skull discovered in the Çorakyerler fossil locality in the center of Çankırı province. The 8.7 million-year-old fossil, named Anadoluvius turkae, has become one of the most sensational finds of recent times. The Karahantepe Project, which was selected among the 9 best Field Exploration and Research Projects of 2023 at the 5th Shanghai Archaeology Forum, has produced many new findings. Karahantepe, 55 kilometers away from Şanlıurfa city center, is one of the important archaeological sites of our country with its history dating back 11,500 years. In the studies carried out in 2023, a human statue, sitting on a bench and reaching a height of 2.45 meters, was found in a structure dating back to the last stages of the settlement. In this statue, which received great coverage in our country and the world press, it is assumed that the depiction of skeletal parts such as the collarbone, ribs, neck vertebrae and shoulder blades symbolizes death, while the sitting and erect phallus symbolizes a living individual. In Tavşanlı Mound, which is called the "Heart of Kütahya" because it resembles a heart when viewed from the air, 3,700-year-old human remains were reached in the 2023 season. The skin and tissue pieces preserved on the skeletons in a carbonized form until today are very important in terms of being the first examples in our country. With the restoration works that have been continuing rapidly in recent years, many ancient cities are being restored to their former glory. In 2016, the circular planned fountain structure was completely revealed with scientific excavations in the ancient city of Kibyra in the Gölhisar district of Burdur. The fountain structure, which has a unique plan, was re-erected after approximately 2 thousand years after the restoration works completed in 2023 and the water provided from its original source was re-flowed.
