The Archaeological Guide to the Territorium of Phrygia Hierapolis (Pamukkale) presents the results of research conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission since 2005, aiming at the reconstruction and archaeological mapping of the population that inhabited this territorium from the Prehistoric to the Byzantine Period. The studied area covers the northern slope of the valley of the Lykos River (now Çürüksu), where Hierapolis is located, and the Uzunpınar Plateau, bounded to the north by the meandering bed of the Maiandros; the research also includes a part of the nearby Çal Plateau, which was part of the territory ruled by Hierapolis at least during the Middle Imperial Period. After documenting important archaeological assets dating from the Bronze Age to the Phrygian Period before the foundation of Hierapolis, the book presents the framework of the organization of the Hierapolis chora during the Hellenistic and Byzantine Periods and the villages with their extensive quarries (marble, travertine, alabaster and polychrome breccia), aqueducts serving the city, the ancient road system, sanctuaries, farms and necropolises.
