A ceramic object, in a way, bears witness to the social, economic and artistic level of the culture in which it was produced, in relation to its form, decorative style and function. Especially in reading the socio-economic and socio-cultural levels of cultures that are no longer alive today, ceramics are the most important data source with their structure that never disappears even if they are broken and crumbled.
The need I felt for a Turkish ceramics dictionary, which started when I was a student about fifty years ago, led me to work on preparing a Turkish ceramics dictionary. Seeing the limitlessness of the process of gaining the necessary knowledge, I decided to put an end to it and write the book. However, other research and projects took precedence. Work on the dictionary always remained on the agenda.
In order to create such a comprehensive work, it is necessary to collaborate with experts in their fields, at least a designer who will prepare the work for publication and a ceramic technology expert. About a year ago, our team was completed with the participation of my valuable colleague and friend Prof. Dr. Zeliha Mete. In short, this book is the product of a teamwork carried out with Zeliha Mete and Kamuran Çizer.
Dictionaries that belong to a field are generally more narrow and comprehensive, such as Technical Terms Dictionary, Archaeological Ceramics Dictionary, etc. Here, we tried to create a book that touches on the history, culture and art of ceramics, as well as the technique, and that can be read and viewed, compiled from our own knowledge and resources, not only for those interested in ceramics but also as a general culture.
We believe that the book will not only be a handbook that students at all levels of ceramics education can use to access concise information, but will also be a resource that our professional colleagues can review and use as a starting point for research.
In the dictionary, in addition to technical terms such as raw materials, materials, production and decoration methods, an attempt has been made to include certain archaeological ceramic examples of Anatolia. Traditional ceramic production along with the ceramic history of Anatolia is also included in the appendix section of the book. The ceramic productions and techniques specific to the Mediterranean basin, which has had close relations with Anatolia throughout history, are also mentioned.
On the other hand, the Far East, especially the ceramic culture and history of China, the homeland of porcelain production, and the Japanese porcelain culture are also mentioned. The ceramic history and culture of Iran, which has a rich ceramic history, and the history and culture of European ceramics and porcelain are also given extensive coverage. The history and examples of American native ceramics are also mentioned. Certain productions of Indian ceramics are not forgotten either.
The dictionary entries were not only defined, but also supported with visuals (photographs, drawings, graphics, etc.) as much as possible. Some visuals were obtained from ceramic samples and travel photographs in our own collection, and also from the collections of many museums such as the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, the Amasya Museum, the Antalya Museum, the Burdur Museum, the Iznik Museum, and the Çanakkale Museum.
