THE SCARF OF THE CRYING WOMEN
The Weeping Women Sarcophagus was found by Osman Hamdi Bey in the Sidon Royal Necropolis in 1877. It is one of the columned sarcophagi dating back to the pre-Roman period and is considered one of the most important sarcophagi in the world with its workmanship. It dates back to the Hellenistic period. It is estimated to belong to Straton, King of Sidon, who died in 360 BC.
It is one of the best preserved sarcophagi in the world. On the sarcophagus are reliefs of women crying for the death of the king and funeral corteges. On both sides of the lid are funeral processions and around the base are hunting scenes. It is thought that more than one sculptor worked on its construction. The sarcophagus is in the form of an Ionic temple.
It is exhibited in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums.
