DAMS
Engraved in our minds as “Three Screams in the Water”; Zeugma, which the Birecik Dam tried to swallow, Allianoi, which the Yortanlı Dam strangled, and Hasankeyf, which was the victim of the Ilısu Dam, are once again occupying our minds with all their experiences, possessions and losses.
DAMS TRUTH AND ARCHAEOLOGY
This special issue of Aktüel Archaeology Magazine titled "The Truth About Dams and Archaeology" examines the dilemma of dams and cultural heritage, which is frequently discussed in the public opinion but with incorrect data, in great detail.
- What is the state's dam policy?
- What will happen to our cultural assets in the face of public works projects that are seen as requirements of modern life?
- Are the archaeologists in the dam areas really AKUT?
- At what stage of the dam projects does the Ministry of Culture and Tourism get involved?
- Are dam projects preferred over archaeological and cultural heritage in terms of Turkey's development?
- Why haven't alternative projects been developed as an energy source?
All these questions and more were directed to the Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertuğrul Günay, the Minister of Environment and Forestry Veysel Eroğlu, and the General Director of DSI Haydar Koçaker.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özdoğan; brings an important perspective to the contradiction between meeting the requirements of contemporary life and protecting cultural assets, and also explains what the Karakaya, Keban, Atatürk, Karkamış and even Ilısu Dams gained while destroying. Prof. Dr. Numan Tuna; evaluates cultural heritage protection strategies and dam rescue excavations within the scope of TAÇDAM projects, which started in 1968 with the Keban Dam as one of the first comprehensive application examples of the contemporary integrated protection concept in the world and continued until the Ilısu Dam. ICOMOS Turkey National Committee President Prof. Dr. Nur Akın, takes the Birecik Dam built on the Euphrates River and the past and present of Halfeti as subjects, revealing natural, physical, social and cultural loss. She draws attention to a vanishing river, the Euphrates, the olive groves, pistachio and pomegranate gardens, culture and people of the Euphrates. Özgen Acar is about the "moles" who have been plundering Zeugma since the 19th century.
Telling the Truth about Dams is not limited to this. Zeugma, which is engraved in our minds as "Three Screams in the Water"; Allianoi, which was strangled by the Yortanlı Dam, and Hasankeyf, which was the victim of the Ilısu Dam, are once again occupying our minds with all their experiences, possessions and losses.
In the Upper Tigris Valley, the Middle Bronze Age religious center Hirbemerdon Tepe, an agricultural colony center Gre Abdurrahman, Körtik Tepe, which sheds light on the pre-pottery Neolithic Period of Anatolia, Müslümantepe, the most important representative of the Ubaid culture, the Late Chalcolithic settlement Kuriki Mound, Hakemi Use and Karavelyan, which revealed the painted pottery culture of the Valley, Kavuşan Mound, which has always been a preferred settlement area with its wide lands suitable for agriculture, Gre Amer, the largest settlement along the Garzan Valley, Gre Virike, an important religious center and open air temple between Karkemış and Birecik for a thousand years, and Zeviya Tivilki, a rural settlement under Neo-Assyrian rule; all of these are proof of how negatively dams affect cultural heritage. We cannot help but say that if the work had been started at least when the dam projects were planned, we would have more extensive information and documentation regarding human history today.
