CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGY 21ST ISSUE ANATOLIAN CAPITALS
Hattusa, the capital of the Hittites who established the first central power in Anatolia and ruled for about five centuries, served as the capital of the Hittite Empire for a long time, but it is also known that the capital was moved to Tarhuntassa in a planned manner for a short time. The Phrygians, who played an important role in the collapse of the Hittite Empire, settled in Central Anatolia and chose Gordion, which was located on the main roads cutting through Anatolia and had abundant water and wide agricultural and pasture areas, as their capital.
After Gordion, we head to Tushpa, the capital of the Urartians, the blacksmith civilization of Anatolia that ruled Eastern Anatolia for about two centuries. From Tushpa, which was equipped with a magnificent castle and royal structures built on a steep cliff, we move on to the richest civilization of Anatolia, the Lydians, the inventors of coins, and their capital Sardis. We complete the first part of our Anatolian Capitals series with the story of Sardis, which was enriched by the gold particles carried by the Pactolus River.
There are also two important guests in the capitals issue. Felix Pirson, Director of the German Archaeological Institute, with whom we talked about the conditions of the science of archaeology that is developing and changing day by day in Turkey, and Producer Ahmet Tarhan Yazman, who has created a documentary with a completely different flavor by kneading it with his own subjective perspective called "Göbeklitepe - The First Temple of the World" and presented it to us.
