CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGY 53.ISSUE HASANKEYF
THERE IS NO HASANKEYF TO SACRIFICE! What has not been said about Hasankeyf? Countless studies have been conducted and reports have been prepared on the archaeology, cultural texture, ecosystem, people and natural habitat of Hasankeyf. Each of them had a common conclusion: Hasankeyf is the common heritage of humanity with all its values and must be protected.
Despite all the difficulties, the local people who continue their lives with great joy, the fact that Hasankeyf, with its tangible and intangible cultural heritage, archaeology and ecosystem, should not be destroyed has been emphasized many times with scientific evidence. The necessity of protecting, preserving and leaving it as a heritage of humanity to future generations instead of destroying it has been written and drawn continuously for the last 20 years. Everyone said the same thing in different ways:
There is no HASANKEYF that we can sacrifice for a dam or any other project! Instead of destroying Hasankeyf, we should apologize to every person, every stone, every living creature that has been hurt for years and heal the wounds that have opened without wasting any more time. Hasankeyf does not need to be left under water, but to be repaired, protected and embraced. Both Hasankeyf, the people living there and us, those who have been raising our voices for Hasankeyf for years and making efforts to prevent it from being submerged under the dam waters... We are all trying to show that this "dam" project is a big mistake and that this mistake must be reversed as soon as possible. Because... we are not the enemies of this geography, but those who know it, try to know it, love it, care about it, and see ourselves as a part of this geography, not its owner.
Enough...
After the 1950s, all the bureaucrats and politicians who signed the construction of dams as a destructive policy in this country were wiped out from the stage of history within 60 years. But the values they destroyed had been there for 10 thousand years. Every civilization before us left a work in Hasankeyf. Now they are trying to destroy all of these. In whose name, in the name of which values, can natural wealth that has been formed over millions of years, cultural archaeological values that have been formed over 10 thousand years be destroyed? How can you find this responsibility in yourself, how can you dare to do this?
Those who destroy, those who sign to destroy... Weren't the dozens of mounds you left under the dam waters enough? Weren't Zeugma, Allianoi enough? Weren't Samsat, Lidar Mound enough? Weren't Halfeti, Juliopolis enough? Weren't the dozens, hundreds of mounds and archaeological settlements that we can't even finish listing, or maybe whose names we haven't even had the chance to learn?
This must be stopped and Hasankeyf must be protected with all its richness.
It is time to make peace with Anatolia, its archeology, culture, nature and people! Because the future cannot be established by destroying the past. The future is established by caring about the excitement of unearthing a statuette made 10 thousand years ago. Therefore, before it is too late, we must understand Anatolia, protect it and make peace with this geography that has been subjected to great destruction with its nature and archeology for the last 60 years.
Finally, during the Aksaray-Yenikapı junction works within the scope of the Bosphorus Tube Tunnel Project in Yenikapı, Istanbul, a wall structure in the form of wooden molds was detected. Although it was understood that these wooden remains that were brought to light were the breakwaters belonging to the Theodosius Harbor, these breakwaters were destroyed with excavators in an unbelievable way. Those responsible for this vandalism must definitely make a statement and explain to the public how they turned a blind eye to the destruction of this unique work, not only in terms of Istanbul but also in terms of Byzantine history, maritime history and civilization history.
