COVID-19 IS NOT THE FIRST

Inadequate remembrance of the past can be fatal for the present!

The prefix "pan" in the word pandemic, which has entered many of our vocabulary with the Covid-19 outbreak, has an important meaning. In Greek, "pan", meaning "all, entire", was combined with the word "demos" "people" and the word "pandemic" was derived. Pandemics are a general name given to epidemic diseases that spread to very wide areas "all" in the world.

The great plague spread by the prisoners of war brought from Egypt by Suppiluliuma I , Suppiluliuma had caused the death of many people, including his elder son Arnuvanda II and his younger son Mursili II. The Hittite population decreased, their livelihoods became inadequate and the people faced great losses. It was also known that this plague was caused by dense settlement, and the most important precautions to get rid of the disease were to clean people, the environment and food.

In history, the Black Death, which occurred between 1346-1353, was not the only infectious disease to affect the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, but it was the deadliest. The Black Death epidemic, which occurred in the mid-14th century, affected the Afro-Eurasian world from Central Asia to the Middle East, Europe and North Africa. The Black Death was a great disaster. It did not recognize age, status or gender. However, the second epidemic, known as the 1361 epidemic, which occurred later, targeted young people. For this reason, another name for it was the "Children's Plague". The plague recurred for several centuries in Northern and Western Europe in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, in Russia in the late 18th century, and in the Middle East in the 19th and early 20th centuries until it gradually lost its effect. The last outbreak of plague in Turkey occurred in 1947. In fact, the plague had become a part of life in the Ottoman Empire. It was born and developed under the shadow of the plague. There were three important cleanliness targets for protection from the epidemic: air, water and morality.

Some Islamic scholars claim that there is information in the Quran that plague broke out in the Abyssinian army that besieged Mecca. According to researchers, the first plague outbreak in Islamic history lasted between 541-750. Hadiths that provide information about plague and how Muslims should be protected from it have been studied for centuries.
