After a long preparation, the Byzantine Emperor Diogenes aimed to expel the Turks from Anatolia and even to advance to the Seljuk capital. On March 13, 1071, he set out from the capital with a large army consisting of his own troops as well as Armenians, Russians, Bulgarians, Georgians, Normans, Franks, Germans, Pechenegs, Uz (Oghuz) and Kipchaks. He came to Erzurum via Eskişehir and Sivas and from there to Muş and Malazgirt. As soon as Alp Arslan received the news that the Byzantine army was advancing in Anatolia, he cut short his Egyptian campaign (April 26, 1071), disbanded a part of his army in order to be able to move quickly and immediately reached Hoy from the Urfa and Mosul line and started to wait for the Byzantine army there. After both armies made the necessary preparations, the plain in front of the Malazgirt district center of Muş province witnessed a great battle on August 26, 1071. Byzantine Emperor IV. The Battle of Manzikert, which took place between Romanos Diogenes (1068-1071) and the Great Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan (1063-1072) and resulted in a decisive victory for the Seljuks, is known as "the battle that opened the gates of Anatolia to the Turks" with its consequences that affected Turkish and world history. The Battle of Manzikert, which took place in front of Manzikert and in which the Byzantines were defeated, their army was largely destroyed and their emperor was taken prisoner, broke the military resistance of the Byzantines and thus started the process of Anatolia becoming Türkiye.
