It would not be wrong to say that a ship graveyard dating back to the Byzantine Period was found under Yenikapı; the 37 shipwrecks reached in the years following the discovery are the best evidence of this… The riddle of the Yenikapı shipwrecks is revealing its secrets as the examinations continue. The interdisciplinary studies carried out by the ancient ship experts trained by the Istanbul University team are now allowing long forgotten shipbuilding traditions to be recognized again. The Istanbul University experts, who will examine the anatomy of a total of 27 shipwrecks, have become the group that has assumed the greatest responsibility in the field after the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, which carried out the Yenikapı Rescue Excavations. The team is trying to bring the shipwrecks they have undertaken to life with conservation and restoration applications. For this purpose, a diligent team consisting of faculty members of the department, research assistants and undergraduate and graduate students are conducting intensive scientific studies on the shipwrecks in the laboratories established in the ‘Department of Protection of Underwater Cultural Remains’ established within Istanbul University.
