CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGY 40TH ISSUE EXCAVATION SEASON BEGINS
Summer has arrived and the rush has begun. Preparations are rapidly underway with the excitement of a new excavation season. Excavations will begin with scientists from all over Turkey and the world. Visit every excavation site around you and get information. This legacy is yours.
Last year, many excavations on the Syrian border could not be carried out due to security reasons. Especially Tell Tayinat and Alalakh (Tell Aççana) excavations were important excavations that have recently made a name for themselves with both their findings and archaeological application methods. Unfortunately, these excavations have been affected by the Syrian war... International teams from different universities around the world who choose countries such as Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria to conduct research, excavations and projects, go to the country with the available budget and funds in hand and conduct studies. For the last 20 years, many international scientific teams preferred Turkey as a field of study because they could not conduct research in the countries around Turkey due to wars and security reasons. This situation has also led to the strengthening of Turkish archaeology in recent years. Many excavation sites have been opened and much information, especially about the early periods, has been revealed. This situation has both led to the development of archaeology and Turkey gaining a much greater place in world archaeology. Despite these positive developments and Turkey being a suitable country for scientists in terms of security, some new regulations made for scientists have started to cause these teams to leave Turkey. In particular, scientists excavating Neolithic sites were asked to purchase – nationalize – the areas they excavated. These and similar conditions demanded for these excavations, which do not require much protection, repair and security after the excavation and are completely aimed at revealing information, left these teams, who do not even have enough budget to conduct excavations but are world-renowned and have high scientific levels, in a very difficult situation and many of these scientific teams were forced to leave Turkey. The areas that these scientists were forced to leave are being plundered by thousands of treasure hunters every year. Instead of providing scientists with suitable environments and opportunities and contributing to their research, it is incomprehensible to put forward unnecessary conditions that require them to leave their research areas and to leave the abandoned areas to the plunder of treasure hunters. Instead of alienating scientists, establishing a system that provides them with areas of work and necessary conditions, evaluates them with the science they present and the young scientists they train will make great contributions to Turkish archaeology in the coming decades. For a world without war…
