Tears of Anatolia presents the most comprehensive inventory ever prepared of our historical artifacts, the vast majority of which were taken abroad from various regions of Anatolia between 1830 and 1922 by various methods, and are currently exhibited in museums in Europe and the USA. Yaşar Yılmaz began his research while seeking answers to the questions he posed to himself, “How many historical artifacts do we have abroad? Is there a study on our artifacts taken abroad?” and began to pursue these artifacts. Yılmaz compiled the inventory in your hand by visiting museums that have artifacts that have been taken from Anatolia one by one. On this path, which he embarked on with the passion of an amateur researcher, Yılmaz conducted research in more than 50 museums in more than 10 countries, with great effort and devotion. During these three-year travels, he examined on-site the historical artifacts that were taken from Anatolia and that today add great richness to many Western museums, and documented them with their inventory numbers.
In Tears of Anatolia, countries, cities and museums are listed alphabetically in order to ensure that readers (especially those who will visit museums in the West) can easily access the works exhibited in these museums. The discovery of these works by Westerners, their stories of transportation and the perception of historical works in our country are told using the notes, diaries and historical documents of foreign travelers and researchers who conducted exploration and excavation work in Anatolia during the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Today, in Western museums, there are tens of thousands of historical works produced by many Anatolian civilizations such as the Hittite, Lycian, Urartian, Eastern Roman, Seljuk, Ottoman etc. Original examples of these works, ranging from simple kitchenware to valuable jewelry, from marble and bronze carvings to giant monumental tombs, from mosaics to carpets, from war tools to mosque altars, are included in this book.
