Yenikapı Batıkları Cilt III YENİKAPI 12 Erken Orta Çağ Tüccarı Kazı, Dokümantasyon, İnşaat ve Teknoloji
This book tells the scientific story of the small merchant ship Yenikapı 12, which has a special place in the Istanbul University Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project.
The small merchant vessel named Yenikapı 12 was near the piers on the east side of the Theodosius Harbor in the early 9th century AD. This coastal seafaring vessel was single-masted, Latin sailed, and steered with shoulder rudders, and carried approximately 250 amphorae in its hold. Its low draft and flat-bottomed hull allowed it to easily enter shallow harbors and bays, be beached, and even navigate rivers. It was also designed to increase its cargo capacity and facilitate maneuverability and navigation. However, it was submerged by a sudden summer storm in the Sea of Marmara, and was quickly covered by the deposition of sand from the seabed.
Approximately 12 centuries after its sinking, it was discovered and excavated by archaeologists from the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. It was removed from the field, documented, and its construction techniques, design and reconstruction were studied by the Istanbul University Underwater Cultural Remains Protection Department team; a full-scale floating reconstruction was built. The Yenikapı 12 Reconstruction set sail again in the Marmara waters in 2018.
